Somebody told me that distillers are a pain to use, is it true? I have a reverse-osmosis filter, do you know if it would do the job?

There are reverse osmosis units that will convert salt water into fresh water, don't expect just any unit to accomplish this. A miniature desalination plant can be purchased from marine supply houses. They are very expensive and high maintenance.
We had one on one of our platforms when I worked offshore many years ago. The difference between a desalination plant and an ordinary RO is that it is very heavy duty, all 316 stainless steel and operates at about 900 PSI input pressure. They work great when they work.

I think you can boil water and then condense the steam to get rid of the salt. Now that is a pain to do.

Let the Sun do it for you for free. The water does not have to boil. What is required is a collector surface temperature that is under the dew point.

Boiling is not desirable as impurities can be carried over in droplets lofted from the surface.

As for the witchcraft spell, all water is drinkable. A spell to remove that which is not water might be better?

Yea I heard of that. I am not sure if either one is really practical though. Atleast not for getting large amount of water.
